Why Can't I Use My Depop Balance to Pay? 7 Fixes

By Depop Automation Team · October 7, 2026 · 4 min read

You've sold a few things, there's money in your Depop balance, and you've found something you want. Then at checkout the balance option is greyed out, missing, or only covers part of the price. Depop does let you spend cleared balance on purchases (see can you use your Depop balance to buy items on Depop), so when it doesn't work there's usually a specific reason. Work through these in order.

1. The money is still pending

This is the cause most of the time. Only Available balance can be spent. Money from recent sales sits in Pending until the order clears Depop's hold period, and pending funds can't be used at checkout or transferred out.

Fix: open your balance screen and check the available figure, not the headline total. See Depop balance vs available balance.

2. Your available balance doesn't cover the total

The total at checkout includes the item, shipping and any buyer-side fees, not just the listed price. If your available balance is lower than that total, Depop will apply what you have and ask for a card to pay the rest.

Fix: add a card for the difference, or wait for more sales to clear.

3. You're looking in the wrong place at checkout

The balance option usually sits in the payment method section of checkout, not on the listing page. If a card is already saved as your default, it can look as though balance isn't offered.

Fix: tap the payment method at checkout and switch it to balance.

4. The app is out of date

Payment options change between app versions, and older versions don't always show the newest ones.

Fix: update the Depop app, then fully close and reopen it. If it still doesn't appear, try checking out on the website instead.

5. Your account or payments verification isn't finished

If Depop is still verifying your identity or payout details, some balance features can be restricted until that's done. New sellers and sellers under 18 often hit this. See Depop payouts and minor verification.

Fix: check your notifications and payments settings for an outstanding verification step and complete it.

6. A return or dispute is holding funds

An open case on one of your sales holds that sale's money. If most of your balance comes from that order, there may be little left to spend.

Fix: resolve the case first. See the Depop buyer protection and refunds guide for how cases are handled.

7. Balance payments aren't available for that purchase or region

Depop's payment features don't always roll out everywhere at once, and some purchases may not accept balance. If none of the fixes above work, this is the likely reason.

Fix: contact Depop support from the help centre in the app, and pay by card in the meantime.

If you just want the money out

If checkout isn't cooperating and you'd rather have the money in your bank, the transfer route is separate. See how to transfer your Depop balance to your bank account, or why you can't withdraw money from Depop if that's blocked too.

Spend it knowing what you actually made

Before you spend your balance on someone else's listing, it helps to know how much of it is profit. The balance is net of Depop's fees, but it still includes what you paid for your stock. DepopAutomation.com's profit tracker records the real margin on every sale, so you can tell how much is safe to spend.

If you want more balance clearing each week, the AI listing tool, bulk lister and relist feature take care of the listing work so more items go live and stay visible.

Conclusion

If you can't pay with your Depop balance, it's usually because the money is still pending or doesn't cover the full total. Less often, the cause is an old app version, unfinished verification, an open case, or balance payments not being available for that purchase. Check the available figure first and work down the list. Most of the time it's a few days of waiting, not a fault.
